Bodkin Design and Engineering Develops Advanced Optical Biosensor

Bodkin Design and Engineering LLC (BD&E) recently collaborated with a leading instrument manufacturer to develop an innovative electro-optical osmometry instrument for medical diagnostics. The system uses optical scattering to determine the freezing point of minute biological samples, augmenting the client’s internal expertise in chemistry and thermal control with BD&E’s specialized electro-optical engineering capabilities.

Following a collaborative trade-off analysis to balance manufacturing costs, ease of use, and sensitivity, BD&E designed and fabricated a bench-top prototype. This apparatus integrated precision lenses, laser diodes, optical detectors, detection circuitry, a lock-in amplifier, and a CCD imager. Throughout the process, BD&E provided continuous technical analysis and design refinements. To facilitate the transition to production, the firm delivered a comprehensive documentation package, including parts lists, mechanical drawings, and recommended suppliers, enabling the client to bring the technology to market.
