Surface Finish Inspector

Showing Surface Finish Inspector's analysis of a piece of wood

  • Locates hard-to-see defects on boards’ surface
  • Identifies defects continuously
  • Signals errors in production early
  • High-speed machine vision system

For lumber mills, surface finish defects of softwood are difficult to spot. Bodkin Design & Engineering created the Surface Finish Inspector (SFI), a machine vision instrument that utilizes structured lighting and image processing to accentuate flaws.

BD&E created an in-line inspection tool to capture high-speed images of the boards to allow for the continuous automated inspection of lumber products.
