LED Lighting

Recent US federal regulation set into motion a phasing out process that will result in an outright ban on all traditional incandescent light bulbs by the year 2014. Furthermore, these regulations state that light bulbs in all wattage categories must use 25% -30% less energy then they do today by 2014 and 70% less by 2020.

The first generation replacement for Thomas Edison's invention is the spiral compact fluorescent (CFL) bulb. Although CFL's cost on average of $3 or six times more then an incandescent, they have the advantages of consuming about 75% less energy and can last up to 5 years longer then the bulbs they replace. Unfortunately CFL's contain small amounts of highly toxic mercury which can cause problems for consumers when breakage occurs and a potential environmental hazard caused by the mass deposal of billions of CFLs when they eventually burn out.
